Pedro Morales-Almazan is an Associate Teaching Professor of Mathematics at UC Santa Cruz. He earned his PhD in mathematics from Baylor University, where he studied spectral zeta functions and the Casimir effect, and taught at the University of Texas at Austin before joining UCSC in 2018.
His teaching centers on inquiry-based learning, project-based assessment, and the use of improvisational theater to build more human connections in mathematics classrooms. He has redesigned lower-division calculus and precalculus courses, created courses in industrial mathematics and data science, and leads undergraduate research groups on topics such as machine learning and AI. He received the 2023-24 UCSC Academic Senate Excellence in Teaching Award and the PBSci Ron Ruby Teaching Award.
Inquiry-based and experiential learning in mathematics, including course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), project-based assessment, and improv-informed teaching. Curriculum design and redesign for calculus and lower-division courses. Responsible integration of AI and large language models in higher education and STEM instruction. Research background in spectral zeta functions, the Casimir effect, regularization, and quantum field theory.
