History Of Consciousness
MA in Philosophy from Boston College and BA in the same from UC Berkeley. Emmett's also a decent handball player and musician.
Emmett's thought is highly influenced by Plato, Aristotle, Paul, Augustine, Luther, Marx, the French Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida’s deconstruction, Hayden White’s metahistory and figural realism, Norman O. Brown’s psychoanalytic reading of history, and Robert Meister’s work. Topical expertise includes political theory, political economy, political theology, human rights discourse, colonialism (post-colonial theory), financialization, globalization, and Trump/Trumpism.
Emmett's current research is an attempt to understand: 1) the appeal of Donald Trump, 2) how his presidency squares with American history (both what we do and what we tell ourselves about what we do) and the US Constitution, 3) what has changed after Trump, and 3) what is new about our current conjuncture, especially in relation to geo-political considerations.
