Dr. Darrell D.E. Long is Distinguished Research Professor of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is also Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Engineering and Director Emeritus of the Storage Systems Research Center. He is a leading authority in data storage, reliability, and computer security, with contributions spanning storage architectures, metadata management, deduplication, distributed systems, and operating systems. His research has significantly influenced scalable storage solutions, including IBM TotalStorage/SAN and Ceph, and has addressed critical challenges in exascale file systems and secure storage technologies.
Dr. Long received his B.S. in Computer Science from San Diego State University before earning his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. While in graduate school, he served as a Lecturer in mathematics at San Diego State University and in computer science at UC San Diego. After completing his Ph.D., he joined the faculty at UC Santa Cruz, where he played a pivotal role in shaping research and graduate studies, serving as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.
He has held visiting positions at leading institutions worldwide, including the Université Paris–Dauphine (Paris IX), the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, Université Paris–Descartes (Paris V), Sorbonne Université, the University of Technology, Sydney, and the Center for Communications Research. He is also Professor ad Honorem at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay and an Associate Member of CERN.
Dr. Long has been deeply involved in national security and defense technology policy, serving on the University of California President’s Council on the National Laboratories for over a decade and contributing to Science & Technology, National Security, and Intelligence committees for the national labs. He has been a member of the National Research Council’s Standing Committee on Technology Insight-Gauge, Evaluate, and Review (TIGER), the Committee on Defense Intelligence Agency Technology Forecasts and Reviews, and the Committee on Science and Technology for Defense Warning. He currently serves on the Intelligence Science and Technology Experts Group (ISTEG) for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Dr. Long has served as Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Storage and the IEEE Letters of the Computer Society. In 2002, he founded the Conference on File and Storage Technologies (FAST), now a premier venue for storage research. His technical contributions include pioneering work on metadata separation in file systems, scalable deduplication, and security frameworks for large-scale distributed storage.
Dr. Long was named an IEEE Fellow in 2006 for his work on storage systems architecture and performance. In 2008, he was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His leadership in storage technology, cybersecurity, and high-performance computing continues to shape the field and guide future research directions.

Dr. Darrell D.E.
